2019 was a strong year of growth for garden centres nationally, with overall sales up 8% on 2018 according to the latest HTA Market Update report. December sales were up 5% compared with the same month in 2018.
Houseplants saw an increase of 32% compared to December last year, the Pets & Aquatics category was up 20%, and Lifestyle & Gifts sales were up 9% in month to month comparisons between December 2018 and December 2019.
HTA Director of Membership Martin Simmons comments “The report highlights a notable jump in consumer confidence in December for both personal and the general economic situation over the coming year, which GfK report as the most robust increase since the summer of 2016. Consumer confidence increased three points to -11 in December, which is three points higher than this time last year. Alongside high levels of employment and record low inflation levels, this is a really positive position for both consumers and retailers.”
In December we saw the most hours of sunshine in a month of December since 2014, however it was also the wettest December for 5 years
The December issue of Market Update looks at last month’s garden centre sales and overall market performance. It measures consumer confidence, the wider UK economy, vehicle fuel prices, groundwater levels, and weather all of which have an impact on sales. This edition also looks at HTA member business confidence going into 2020.
