The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) have their biggest ever presence at the world famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which takes place next week (23-27 May 2017).
12 APL members are involved in over half of the 28 main featured show gardens with many of them working on multiple gardens. In addition to this, there are also APL members building trade stands for some of the premier companies exhibiting at the show. The excellence of APL members and size of this ever growing landscape community has never before been so apparent.
APL Apprentices took up the challenge of Chelsea by assisting in the build of some of the BBC Radio 2 Feel Good Gardens; namely the Jo Whiley Scent Garden and the Chris Evans Taste Garden. Radio 2 is taking part in the show as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations and the gardens are designed to show how plants can enrich and indulge the senses. Graeme Cheel from Newcastle based Plants and Paving sent six of his APL Apprentices down to London to assist in the build of these two RHS sponsored gardens, mentored by Jody Lidgard and his Bespoke Outdoor Spaces team, which includes World Skills Champions Matt Beesley and Will Burberry. A positive initiative that displays a huge trust and investment by APL members in the young people that are entering the industry, and demonstrates the great career opportunities available in the landscaping industry.
Bowood Landscapes have helped to build the industry showcase exhibit ’40 Sunbury Road’ in the Great Marquee. The garden, which includes contributions from growers and suppliers from across the industry, is run in conjunction with Peter Seabrook and The Sun and is a celebration of Peter’s 40 years working at the newspaper. The objective of the project is to create a typical modest suburban back garden that consumers can relate to, whilst at the same time inspire and provide some new and interesting ideas that could easily be copied. The garden includes HTA member grown bedding and container plants, with trees, shrubs and other structural elements supplied by HTA and APL members.
