Dear Member
The HTA and APL are working with other sector associations on an Access All Areas EDI strategy and programme of work to become more equitable, diverse and inclusive in all that we do as a group for all. You may recall the charter was launched in January 2022.
We would like to let you know that over the coming weeks and months we will be running a number of webinars that would be both educational and insightful, offering you all the opportunity to become more proactive in supporting our sector’s journey to becoming more diverse and inclusive.
These webinars will consist of content that introduces you and your teams to the need to position Inclusion at the heart of every that we do. The education piece will help us all gain a better understanding of the following:
- The context of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
- What an inclusive workplace looks like
- The barriers to inclusion such as our unconscious biases and the lack of allyship.
- The resulting microaggression (results of everyday banter)
- The role that Allies can have in creating an inclusive Ecosystem.

Cross Industry EDI Charter
On 15 November 2022, at the FutureScape industry exhibition, representatives from the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), British Association of Landscape Industries, the Landscape Institute (LI), the Society of Garden Designers (SGD), The Young People in Horticulture (YPHA) and The Aboricultural Association (AA), signed a joint declaration to work towards a more diverse and inclusive industry through the sharing of work and good practice. Other signatories to the charter who weren’t able to be present on the day include the HTA, the RHS, The Chartered Institute of Horticulture, and the Garden Media Guild.
These signatories to the Charter confirm their commitment ‘to progress the breaking down of barriers in the industry and increasing access and progression for all. To work openly and respectfully with other chartered members’:
- We commit to create an inclusive culture and measure how we engage and improve representation.
- Support the development of our industry from an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion perspective - regardless of area of specialism, through the sharing of work and good practice.
- To recognise and monitor Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion across the industry, using a set format to benchmark performance.
- Provide access to resources for educating and upskilling colleagues and members on diversity and inclusion.
- Promote the Industry as a fully inclusive and accessible environment with opportunities for lifelong rewarding careers.
