BS 7533-102 - Code of practice

Installation of pavements using modular paving units

Phil Tremayne chats to David Burton Chair of BS7533-102 panel about the new industry standard

We have all heard a lot about it and finally we are almost here. BS7533-101 has been the go to standard adopted by the industry for many years. However this standard largely focused on commercial trafficked areas, categories 3 and above. It could be adapted slightly towards lower traffic areas, but wasn’t always fit for purpose.

Two years ago, The APL produced a series of codes of construction that were in line with current standards to support its members. These are still relevant and can be found HERE

Since then Vice Chair David Strows has been working on a panel with other professionals on the development of a standard that was fit for purpose to the domestic industry. The BS7533-102 and in particular the clause 4 has been created to cover traffic categories 3 and below (so patios, paths etc..) and will become the definitive standard for the industry.

The draft is now available and has been presented for public comment. This means that you get to look at it and see if you agree with what has been written.

BS 7533-102:2023, Pavements constructed with clay, concrete or natural stone paving units. Part 102: Installation of pavements using modular paving units - Code of practice. This part of BS 7533 gives recommendations and guidance for the installation of paved areas having bound and unbound surface construction using:

  • concrete paving blocks conforming to BS EN 1338;
  • concrete paving flags conforming to BS EN 1339;
  • concrete kerb units conforming to BS EN 1340;
  • natural stone setts conforming to BS EN 1342;
  • kerbs of natural stone conforming to BS EN 1343;
  • clay paving units conforming to BS EN 1344
  • porcelain paving slabs.

It provides guidance in traffic categories 3 and below for the construction of a pavement using standard paving units, where a design produced in accordance with BS7533-101 has not been provided.

Once the standard has received all its comments, it will then move from draft to published. The APL will then hold a series of CPD type seminars to help explain the standard to you and answer any questions.

WARNING: THIS IS A DRAFT AND MUST NOT BE REGARDED OR USED AS A BRITISH STANDARD.
