You will have seen in the news the havoc that’s been caused at Marks and Spencer, Co-op, and others by cybercriminals. To support HTA members, we’re signposting some simple, practical advice from the National Cybersecurity centre for small businesses. We’d urge members to read this guide  and act on it.

The reported problems were due to Ransomware; we’ve attached a more detailed guide from cybersecurity specialists Sophos on this. It’s very useful (if slightly technical) information, and can be used as the basis of a conversation with your IT department or service provider about what measures they have in place to keep you safe from this type of cyber crime.  Following on from last week’s resources to protect from the threat of cyber crime, please do take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with Cyber Essentials from the government-backed National Cybersecurity Centre. This standard and certification sets out practical steps businesses can take to ensure they’re protected from cyber crime, and has a really useful self-assessment tool to help you get started.

Protection against cyber-crime should understood and prioritised by any business’s leadership, not just its IT staff.  These resources and toolkits from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) are aimed at business leaders and boards to help ensure their businesses are protected.

NCSC’s blog on the recent cyber attacks on retailers provides critical advice on some points that will go a long way to protecting your businesses from criminal activity.
