Leading UK horticulture association showcases the original green industry at Chelsea 2023

22 May 2023

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is showcasing the growth of a greener future at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Representing and supporting 1,400 UK garden businesses, including retailers, growers, manufacturers, and landscapers, the HTA will demonstrate its members’ contributions to the economy as well as the environment and wellbeing through its trade stand, member gardens, events, and communications.

Horticulture and gardening are vital in creating beautiful green spaces and aligning with the UK government’s 25-year Environment Plan sector. The industry also plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and offering benefits such as improved air quality and productivity gains.

The HTA worked hard to ensure garden centres were deemed essential during the pandemic, highlighting the importance of gardens and horticulture in the UK. The Chelsea Flower Show reflects this significance. 75% of British adults having access to a private garden, and 88% recognise the value of gardens and public green spaces. These statistics underscore the industry's vital role in enhancing the UK population's quality of life and wellbeing.

The horticulture industry supports 674,000 jobs, contributes £28.8 billion to the UK GDP, and generates tax revenues of £6.3 billion. However, it faces numerous challenges, including cross-border trade delays, summer heatwaves, labour and skills shortages, and rising costs. The HTA anticipates even tougher times ahead, making the Chelsea Flower Show an ideal platform to celebrate the industry, highlight its numerous benefits, and meet with key stakeholders and policy makers.

A knowledgeable and friendly team will be available on the HTA trade stand to discuss some of these issues, engage visitors in conversations about horticulture, encourage more people into gardening with National Garden Gift Vouchers and highlight the benefits of membership.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive Officer at the HTA, said:

“The Horticultural Trades Association is proud to showcase the original green industry at RHS Chelsea. Our members are at the forefront of growing a greener future, working tirelessly to cultivate beautiful gardens and green spaces that enhance the quality of life for everyone. The Chelsea Flower Show provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate our wonderful industry and demonstrate its value to key stakeholders and policymakers. Together, we can embrace sustainability, promote the exceptional work of our members, and inspire more people to discover the joys of gardening."
