Meteorologist Peter Gibbs to speak at Horticulture, the Conference dinner

Meteorologist and former BBC weather forecaster Peter Gibbs is confirmed to speak at the annual dinner at Horticulture, the Conference which takes place on at the ICC in Birmingham on Wednesday 25 September 2024.

The conference brings together businesses across the industry for inspiring and thought-provoking discussions, as well as providing an opportunity to network and catch up with colleagues.

Following a degree in physics and geography at Newcastle University, Peter joined the British Antarctic Survey as a meteorologist, living and working in Antarctica for two years at the isolated Halley research station. He then went on to a more than 30-year career as a front-line forecaster with the UK’s Met Office, 20 years of that with the national weather broadcasting team at the BBC.

A Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and the Royal Geographical Society, he regularly chairs the iconic Radio 4 show ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and is passionate about tackling the biodiversity and climate crises. Peter spends much of his spare time doing outreach work to improve public understanding of climate change, while also working with local nature conservation groups around his Berkshire home.

Alan Down, HTA President said

“Peter's blend of scientific expertise, media presence, and community involvement makes him a prominent figure in meteorology and climate change advocacy. We’re really looking forward to hearing his insights at our conference dinner.”

Horticulture, the Conference provides a platform for delegates to network with industry peers, discuss key issues and innovations, and look at ways of working together. The conference programme will cover key topics including business resilience, consumer behaviour and workforce changes.  This year’s dinner will be a special celebration of the HTA’s 125-year anniversary and will feature the presentation of the 2024 Ornamental Grower of the Year Awards and the Pearson Memorial Award.
