UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement

The UK and the EU agreed a common understanding on 19 May 2025 to strengthen cooperation on several areas, including SPS (Sanitary Phytosanitary) arrangements. These new arrangements will be inclusive of plants and plant products.

The term “common understanding” means that further negotiations will be required to work through the detail, but each side has committed to establishing a “Sanitary and Phytosanitary Zone” to encompass both the UK and the EU. Until the negotiations have concluded and the outcomes implemented, everything stays the same.
